Automattic TOS, did you notice that?

Wordpress.com: Terms of Service

quote:
By submitting Content to Automattic for inclusion on your Website, you grant Automattic a world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting your blog. If you delete Content, Automattic will use reasonable efforts to remove it from the Website, but you acknowledge that caching or references to the Content may not be made immediately unavailable.

I was registering in Wordpress.com (not for a blog..lol) but for an API key which i need to do something, there was the link to read about the Terms of Service, i know that many of you don’t read TOS, but i really read TOS sometimes, so i was reading and noticed the above.

Anywayz , i want to ask you to focus on this part:

you grant Automattic a world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content solely for the purpose of displaying

Do you realize that it said ‘modified’! you give automattic the permission to modify whatever you said for you ‘own publicity’ … did you really think of what this implies?

It means that you give wordpress.com the right to modify whatever you said on your blog so as they can display that as content from your website in whatever way they think it might be promotion of your website according to their own opinions..

anywayz, wordpress is great, but do think about reading the TOS another time :)

My dear Selven, Automattic is the company or engine and it needs to be able to “post, store, delete and update” your blog. you’re not doing it manually. hence, it needs you to agree to that agreement,
And if you click delete article/post, it can take a while for the record to get purged.
Only CRUD functions are meant in this agreement and it’s not a dictatorial TOS.
If you are registering there for Akismet, please do know that there are other plugins for dealing with spam aside from Akismet.
I am not a blogger myself but I have built several commenting system off wordpress since it saves time and money. The TOS is ok.

naa, not for akismet, i don’t use akismet.

indeed, but it didn’t mentioned that IT WON’T RESTRICT itself to that…hence a flaw.

some things are obvious. plus, if it had to block say extreme child pedophilia related porn literature, it would do so. if wordpress.com screws up, members will flee and it won’t do that.
i do agree that the TOS could should be lengthen a bit covering certain areas but like i said, certain things are top obvious even to cover on an agreement – else, it will make you appear dumb.

well.. those small details are what lawyers.. would use to screw someone up.

  5. Permal.R Says:

This is why EFF and NNSquad exist – to screw back when being screwed.
Yes, the whole screwing process can be avoided but things will be dull then.

In fact I’ve heard of these little probs with WP’s TOS. Some people were quite alarmed with it, but the thing is, are there any cases where the content has been modified for this so-called publicity? It would have been fun to know, to say the least! :P

  8. selven Says:

no idea about those, i’ll see if i can see anything on it, but my point is that.. you empower wordpress.com to modify your speech whenever they want :p.. which can be.. if at all.. dangerous for our freedom.
