The government sux, it is infecting uom now

read this BEFORE you comment anything : http://www.lexpress.mu/display_article.php?news_id=91684 (new window)

The university of mauritius apparently doesn’t have enough fund to  cope for the massive number of students recruited. There’s a chance univ student will be going to college to study univ stuff now… (this sucks, you realize that there won’t be any such thing as ‘university life” if this is done? Deza ki pa ti tro ena meme sa)

Why the heck does the government needs to get itself involved in academic issue? If the government wanted soo much to give everyone a degree, li ti kapav along with hsc certificate, mail every student who took the examination a degree!

Am not against providing tertiary education to everyone,  its good to do it, but if you can’t afford to give everyone that facility, don’t do it.

Yes, providing tertiary education to everyone does have its advantages(and disadvantages), but definitely, UOM can’t provide that,  so does the university of mauritius has to listen to whatever Ramgoolam says (so as he can say “monn donn zot zenfant accE facile a liniversitE” to boost his popularity?)? This dude doesn’t realize that maybe he is running a country, i believe he thinks he is in a movie of some sort of thing, bizin fer li all zuE ensam ar loana daprE role.

Definitivement, if nothing is done to prevent uom to be butcherred, things needs to be done, and NOW.

Do we have a voice? can the whole univ population voice their opinion, if so, please do it, soon enough, the media will be attracted, we need to voice out, mo konE ena boukou kapon parmi zot bann population, mo konE ki zot tou zot egoist et ki zot pou kachiete deriere zip meme, mais au moins, express zot lopinion anonyme kit part, kapav fer kitsoz lerla!

Mo sirr ki meme bann lecturer la zot pa p gagne hausse lapaie pou sa augmentation zelev la, (so witohut paying lecturers more, do you think you will be able to get quality stuff? bein si zot croire ki profeserr pa pou satirE , b rest trankil meme b)

mo pou continuE enkor lor la plitard, mo p all manzE, mo p arazE la, comment invited.

yeah its true they are payin part time lecturers a huge amount …bien kave take more full time lectures …and concernin the places just imagine u just came from college n u r sent back in college pathetic and horrible may lead to depression as welll.. anyways i m still sure kapave reamenage ca enginering tower …pas blier last floor went to infinity …. one floor in enginerin tower kave met mal mal 10 classes for 30 kids ..we have 8 eight floors makes 80 classes easily problem of places???

Btw they taken more freshers this years coz pena fund result now pena place … great equation ca

The way its going, expect the worst.
    1. Many classes will be combined, lots of people, lots of noise and difficult to concentrate…and above all summer is only a month ahead. Pou bouii dan sa class la!

    2. I suppose some modules will be converted in distant learning and this means exams will be semester-wise.

    3. Due to lack of resources, some departments wont have new books, computers etc.

    4. Some classes might start after 16:00 and end a bit late, think of those students who live quite far away, and nowadays its not safe for girls…even boys are at risk.

    5. Lets talk where UOM stands today…quality level has gone down. Thats because there is not enough “materials” for the students.

The CSE department has to renew its software package to keep u with industry demands/standards.

There’s lots of things that are bad also…example : the UOM syllabus. Only 4 – 6 pages, that’s all !!!! Have you ever seen a cambrige syllabus ( hsc one )…man, there is a world of difference. A syllabus of 60+ pages against one of 6 pages…pe fer dimoune gagne rier. Atleast with a detailed syllabus, students can improve their work…in a way or the other (atleast you know what to learn).

Lecturers teach only what they know, and when you put something they dont know, you get penalised. What is this? Dictatorship??? Instead they should encourage for new ideas etc.

I am not against the fact that more people should get tertiary education, but , if the means to do it can only accomodate for 2000 students then let it for 2000 students only. When resources become available, then only more students can be taken.

Well yusha, you are right on that, but if they have done it till now, probably its because the administration is ‘atardE mental’, OR probably, they are thinking of renting those floors to more companies out that (to make even more money, as after all, who cares about the kids they’ve taken in.. since now that they are in, they are just cows which can be milked to produce money :p).

Sorry to disapoint you, but this is already a REALITY since quite some time ago.

    4. Some classes might start after 16:00 and end a bit late, think of those students who live quite far away, and nowadays its not safe for girls…even boys are at risk.

Late night class ena aster la osi! Mais so problem c, administration never really cared whether you can come to the classes or not, to ena loto ou pas, c pas zot problem.

    5. Lets talk where UOM stands today…quality level has gone down. Thats because there is not enough “materials” for the students.

Its not because there are not enough materials, l’universitE, li p prend tro boukou zenfant dans 1 class, definitivement, lecturer la li pa pou kapav cope are tou sa kantitE zelev la, besides, ena zenfant ki meme pena base pou rent luniversitE mais zot luniversitE and still expect to be spoon fed.
Also, there sure are certain problems about quality of results lately, but the problem is not one way… several factors are causing this, i definitely don’t wish to comment on this, because, i don’t do my effort needed to go by the book.

The CSE department has to renew its software package to keep u with industry demands/standards.

As There was once a discussion on noulakaz.net, that was discussed heavily, and sure enough new softawre would have been great, but definitivement, university is not a place to learn about specific techonology stuffs, mais pluto learn the fundamental of things and get the ability to adapt to any other technology by knowing the underlying principles.

That’s arrogant what you said, and, hsc and university is not the same thing. University is not supposed to be a place to learn things “by the book” (even though it appears to be the case here.)
Frankly that hsc syllabus is bullshit :p

Lecturers teach only what they know, and when you put something they dont know, you get penalised. What is this? Dictatorship??? Instead they should encourage for new ideas etc.

I won’t blame lecturers, besides, they are paid to teach us specific things and i suppose they do know what they are teaching us. Now if they ignore certain things, then, its none of our problem, as long as they can deliver what they are supposed to. Don’t think that am siding lecturers, but i know its easy to put the blame on someone else.
Though if lecturers could stop seeing students the way “college student” is, that would be great, though do we stop being college student or do we still continue to think we are still in college? (you don’t believe me, look around, how many students still learn by heart?)
Sure there are lecturers who might penalise ppl who tries, because if only one tries, then the majority will win and it means nothing.

Mais enfin, the problem is with administration, Do you believe that money is wasted only on part time lecturers? Look again :p i have a hint.. cits, office (for flm) etc.. (there’s more).

Its a fact that one should learn by himself in university and i dont contest this argument. Lecturers do teach in a good way, but some “garde dimoune dan zouain”, u get what i mean! And sometimes lecturer so lamain enba roche…pressure from administration.

Being a CSE student, i find it hard to pay Rs 3000, for library n etc, when there is no good books for cse in UoM Library. I have spent $100+ for books last year.

Concerning software, i know its difficult for UoM to get new ones…but look at other institutions offering courses…ppl there use VS.Net 2003. Its a disparity, and one can feel a bit “outdated”. No offense to UoM, its just a fact out there.

I learned from a source that UoM pays more in Part-Time lecturers that those employed full time. I understand there is a need for lecturers…but cant uni just employ new ones? Enfin mo pa tro tro kompran sa mai finallement c students ki penalised.

I also admit that new recruits act like typical college ppl bcoz they are from college n they expect to get everything “lor plato”. This will change with time.

One suggestion : It would be good if UoM shifted to Open Source sw. That would help in reducing the cost of running the systems. The students can help in maintaining the systems etc.

  9. ss_wolff Says:

If i had money, I’d buy UoM and make it No 1 Univ in Indian Ocean.

I just want to make our uni a better place, and in doing so, “il faut prendre le taureau par les cornes”

:p lol i don’t think this will make any difference :p, the CITS is a blackhole that eats money, and you never see any output from it! You realize how everything CITS controlled sucks?
    Yet they are still paid.
