The village was named after a man called l'Escalier not because of a big stairs or whatever. Curepipe on the other hand deserves its name. It comes from French soldiers who when they were on their way to Quartier Militaire, came to rest and smoke there and to 'cure leur pipes' i.e. to clean their pipes. Now that I think of it, Quartier Militaire is also a good name. Can you believe that I used to hate EVS? L’Escalier is a misleading name.
